Descrição
This checklist consist of the different mangrove species identified and updated during the MESCAL (Mangrove Ecosystems for Climate Change Adaptation and Livelihoods)project from 2011-2014.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
MESCAL project is a German funded project which was implemented in the Pacific region by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). With this project IUCN Oceania seeks to address the key challenges of mangrove management to increase the resilience of the Pacific people to climate change and improve livelihoods. The participating countries includes Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. The objectives of the project is to; Improve livelihoods and conserve biodiversity Empower communities to make informed decisions related to mangrove management Increase institutional and technical capacity for improved environmental governance at all levels Promote community based actions on the ground in mangrove management for improved resilience to climate change Improve baseline knowledge about biological, economic, social and cultural aspects of mangrove resources and uses in each country and the link between healthy mangroves and disaster risk reduction, for informed adaptation to climate change at national and community level. Increase awareness at all levels of the role of mangroves and associated ecosystems in providing resilience to the impacts of climate change Investigate the feasibility for obtaining carbon credits for mangrove protection and reforestation, in the context of REDD+, and participating in the global carbon markets. It was a 4 year project from 2009- 2013
