Описание

The data sampling was taken originally from the fishers and not from fish vendors. Fishers were voluntarily provided their fish catches on day basis to the fisheries enumerators. The data contained fish species fished by the local fishers both from the offshore and inshore region within Temotu provincial water and for instance the most dominant fish family are from Lutjanidae and Scombridae. The fish sampling was purposely to provide a baseline information for Temotu Provincial Government on its fisheries on the basis that a private fish company (called Temout Fish Ltd) operates in the province purchasing fish from the local fishermen.

Данные проекта

The finfish sampling conducted during the period of 2016-2017 by MFMR and Temotu Provincial Fisheries Division has provided valuable information on the biological aspects of the Temotu finfish fisheries. A total of 65 species from 11 fish families were recorded. The top two most common types of fish targeted by fishers were tuna and snappers. Fishers choose to sell their fish either at the Temotu Fish Limited (TFL) or at the fish market, depending on where they could get the best price. The sampling followed the fishers, starting at the Lata fisheries centre but then moving to nearby roadside markets. For this fish sampling, this is the first of its kind from the Solomon Islands Government, the agency responsible for the fisheries sector. The study focus only on the fin-fish species both coastal and pelagic species. It was recommended that any company plans to buy fish for export overseas such as to Vanuatu may need to consider revising their buying price structure to ensure they can have consistent availability of fish in their facility to meet their customer demands.

Название The Fish Sampling at Lata Fish Market in Temotu Province, Solomon Islands
Идентификатор BID-PA2016-0002-REG
Финансирование The project was funded by the New Zealand Aid Program housed in the Solomon Islands Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources named Mekem Strong Solomon Islands Fisheries (MSSIF). The support covers all the technical and administrative costs of the sampling programme from October 2016 to November 2017.
Описание района исследования Solomon Islands is an archipelago in the south-west Pacific, consists of a double chain of rocky islands and some small coral islands. The major islands are Guadalcanal, Choiseul, Santa Isabel, New Georgia, Malaita and Makira (or San Cristobal) and Santa Cruz (or Nendo). Most of the islands are part of the Solomon Islands marine rich ecosystems. The work was conducted in Nendo Island,Temotu Province, on the eastern part of the country.
Описание плана выполнения исследований The sampling intend to provide baseline information for the Provincial Government (Temotu Province) on its fisheries, resource status/viability for fishing operations in the province and finally supports the development of snapper fisheries management plan. The sampling was undertaken by fisheries enumerators though prior to the work, enumerators were trained on the basic sampling approach. The approach is call digital photographic system (DPS) and basically it involves capturing photographs of individual fish species on a designed measuring board with a camera stand frame of a meter height. A pre-programmed SD card is inserted into the camera to capture fish species on the specially designed measuring board that has numeric numbers in centimetres from 1 to 150. Primarily the DPS records the fish species caught or landed through capturing of fish photographs, the fish species lengths and also the fisher’s name to allow the visual linkage between the particular fish catch and the fisher.

Методы сбора

The approach used was digital photographic system (DPS), it involved capturing individual fish images through the usage of a camera. The is attach to a designed measuring board with stand frame of about a meter height and ontop of the stand where the camera is facing downward attach with a screw. In the camera, a pre-programmed SD card was inserted for image storages and the designed measuring board has numeric numbers in centimetres from 1 to 150. Primarily the DPS records the fish species caught or landed, the fish species lengths and also the fisher’s name to allow the visual linkage between the particular fish catch and the fisher. However, undertaking sampling requires two enumerators responsible for placing the fish species onto the measuring the board and another one will work on the camera capturing the photographs.

Охват исследования The sampling was conducted at a single location in Lata Township, Nendo Island. The program was done for a year recording fish species and lenghts via the sampling methodology and the fishers comes from Nendo Islands and perhaps some from nearby Islands - Reef Islands and fishing activities happened close to Tinakula fishing grounds.
