說明
To address the poorly known aspects of freshwater fauna biodiversity in the Fiji Islands, a study of freshwater and estuarine fish was carried out from 2002 to 2004.
This dataset is the result of a Master of Science thesis conducted by David Boseto at the University of the South Pacific, in Suva, Fiji. The fish surveys were carried out in 66 sites in seven watersheds on the islands of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
11 new records and a new genus were added to the known freshwater fish checklist of Fiji.

計畫資料
Freshwater biodiversity data is under reported for the Oceanic islands due to lack of trained resident specialists, misreported dataset and or unpublished dataset mostly limited to grey literature. This can be improved by training freshwater project related representatives from targeted Oceania countries for collation and updating of the existing data on GBIF database. The proposed project aims to directly engage the pool of freshwater experts in the Melanesian region to build capacity on regional freshwater biota data updating and mobilization. This will then contribute to inland wetland policy strengthening, national level ramsar commitments, National Biodiversity Strategic Assessment and Planning (NBSAP), Endangered and Protected Species (EPS) ACT Bill, Environment Management Act in Fiji for example, and eventually near future freshwater species and ecosystem Red Listing Assessments. The targeted countries are Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

取樣方法
In this survey, gill net, cast net, beach seine net, fine mesh net, pole seine net, hand net, spear gun, electro-fisher machine, visual observation, and hand gleaning were the techniques employed to document freshwater fish during the period of October 20th, 2002 to October 10th, 2004. Freshwater fish surveys were carried out in 66 sites in seven watersheds on the islands of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. There are 40 sites in Viti Levu, 5 sites in Vanua Levu and 21 sites on Taveuni.
