The Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program (hereafter referred to as POBSP) of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., conducted an ecological survey in the Central Pacific Ocean, with particular emphasis on the avifauna. As part of this program, a two month field trip to the Marshall and Gilbert Islands was made in October-November of 1964. Later studies were undertaken in June 1966 and in April-May 1967. This dataset presents a summary of all known bird records from the two island groups.
Acknowledgement is made to the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Military Sea Transport Service, who provided ship transportation for the POBSP field teams. Special acknowledgement for cooperation and assistance is extended. This data was digitised from a report published by the Smithsonian Institute as a pdf found online at https://repository.si.edu/handle/10088/6092

This data is published as part of a BID funded project being delivered by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme. The project involves 21 participants from 14 Pacific Island Countries and Territories and is designed to increase capacity for data mobilization and use for decision making.
This work is also funded by the Global Environment Facility (6), through the United Nations Environment Programme. The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme delivers the project titled: Strengthening national and regional capacities to reduce the impact of Invasive Alien Species on globally significant biodiversity in the Pacific
